Supplies Needed:
*Painting surfaces: heavy weight surfaces work best such as 300 pound hot press paper
or crescent illustration board number 200 or Strathmore heavy vellum illustration board.
I also like canvas boards that have been gessoed. Smooth mat board acid-free also works.
Please gesso ahead of time. Bring some 10 x 10 squares or 11 x 14‘s, a total of six or eight
for the class.
*Small plastic cups to mix with water to thin out paint for the tissue.
*Spray bottle to mist tissue to take paint.
*Scissors although tearing is probably preferable.
*A few tall kitchen bags cheap cheap.
*Water container.
*Golden fluid acrylics work the best but you may use any acrylics you have to save money.
We can make them work and for two days I wouldn’t invest. If you have fluid acrylics
Quinacridone magenta, Quinacridone azo gold, turquoise thalo, Black gesso and white
gesso. This limited palette will make a wide range of colored tissue.
*Polymer gloss medium for gluing also a glass jar with wide opening to fit a sizeable brush.
*Plastic dinner trays, Styrofoam trays, paper plates etc. to mix paint on.
*A brayer and paper towels.
*An assortment of brushes, especially a flat cheap brush to apply polymer when adhering papers.
Feel free to bring any interesting paper, rice paper, patterns and textures from magazines
newspapers, prisma color pencils, oil pastels, strings, etc. I also used old watercolors.
Patterns, print or type, stencils, use your imagination.

President Notes April 2018
The 19th Effingham Art Guild Children’s Art Show (March 15th through the 17th) was held at the Suzette Brumleve Memorial Effingham Public Library. The EAG is very grateful to the Effingham Library management and staff for hosting the Children’s Show this year and to Andrew Dougherty, from the library, for judging the show. Thank you to Co-Chairmen Barb Grant and Stacey Zerrusen for the long hours and hard work that it took to put a show of this caliber together. Thank you Dale Wagoner for all the pictures you took and downloading them on the EAG FB page and website for all to enjoy! A huge thank you goes to any of you that helped with the setup, reception and teardown (I have left out names for fear of forgetting someone). Thank you to Dawn Schabbing, Daily News Reporter for the complete coverage of the show, including winners and pictures in the Monday, March 19th Effingham Daily News. (See further information and thank you’s written by Co-Chairman, Barb Grant, below).
The 24th Annual Fine Arts and Photography Show starts Friday, April 20th with art delivery and show setup at W.S. Broom Furniture, 304 W. Jefferson Ave. in downtown Effingham. The reception and award ceremony will be on Saturday, April 21st and art pickup and teardown will be on Saturday, April 27th. Signup sheets for helpers for setup, reception and teardown days will again circulate at the April 10th meeting. Participation in putting on this show is a very important part and obligation of EAG Membership. Please call me at 217-821-9766 if you can help but will not be at the meeting.
SPECIAL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT AT 6PM: ONE HOUR PRIOR TO THE REGULAR 7PM TUESDAY, APRIL 10TH MEETING. I am asking officers, the Advisory Board and those willing to help with the adult show to come at 6 PM to see where we’re at with the planning and what needs to be finalized in the remaining 10 days prior to the show..
Ham Hampton, the EAG treasurer will be finishing his 2 year term so we have an opening to fill by the May meeting for the 2018-19 year starting in September. Please think on this and let us know at the April meeting if you are interested. A new treasurer will be announced at the June meeting.
April Artist Presenter
April 10th’s Presenter will be EAG member, Stacey Zerrusen from Teutopolis, Il. Stacey is a very busy lady but she is always gracious to share her art accomplishments with the EAG. A barn quilt is a large, hand painted wooden block typically displayed on the front or side of a barn.
Stacey Zerrusen will discuss the barn quilt movement sweeping the U.S. and Canada. Meetingattendees will have the chance to make their own small barn quilt. All materials will be provided.
Information:
Elizabeth Thurston, EAG Member, was our “Featured Artist of the Month” for March. Elizabeth shared a
wonderful display of her work showing her varied artistic interests from acrylic/oils on different surfaces of
varying sizes from “mini” to large canvases. She also works with fabric, using paint & appliqué to design
beautiful wall art pieces. Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your wonderful creations!
Thanks goes to Paula Boll of Effingham for sharing a portfolio of her beautifully detailed watercolors varying from landscapes to still life’s.
***Please remember that any of you may bring in a piece or pieces you are working on or have finished to share and remember critiquing is FREE!
REFRESHMENTS for the April Meeting will be provided by Chris Detwiler and Sue Drummond.
Thanks to Elizabeth Thurston and Whitney Ruger for bringing refreshments to the March meeting.
The EAG will have a booth at the Artisan Fair on Saturday May 5th. This is the group’s opportunity to show and sell their art. To go ahead with this project, we need commitment from those of you willing to help setup the tent, get the racks, man the booth for the day and tear down and deliver racks back to the Park District Ron Diehl Center. The Guild has paid the $25.00 entry fee and Jan is providing us with a tent. We need to have an accurate number of who will be participating and how many paintings there will be by the April 10th meeting. Those wanting to participate but unable to make the meeting, please call Bonnie Siebert @ 217-821-7577 or Barb Althoff @ 217-821-9766 with your information.
Reminder: Each year we designate a theme to create a piece of artwork to bring to the final Meeting of the year in June. The group chose “Anything Aquatic” as the group project for 2018. No other rules apply to this endeavor, it’s all for the fun of it! (Kill two birds with one stone–create the project on a 12×12 canvas & enter into the EAG 12×12 Show in July!)
We are out of raffle items so, if anyone has an art related item that they want no longer need or want, bring them in. The raffle is $1.00 per ticket & is set up at the sign in table.
The show at Doctor’s Flaig and Malone will be in the fall at their request due to all the construction going on in and around their office building. They asked, if anyone needs to pick up a piece of art before the next show, that they replace it with another so that the waiting room has enough artwork left for the patient’s to enjoy.
Hope to see everyone at the Tuesday, April 10th @ 7PM meeting!
Meet The EAG 24th Annual Art Show Judge
Mark Hillard
Born 1953, Casey, Illinois
BA,MA, Eastern Illinois University
Drawing and painting has been a part of my life since an early age. I graduated with a non-art related degree from EIU and ultimately followed a career in business. During this time I pursued my artistic interests only intermittently. Following retirement, I returned to art and reinvested myself in refining my skills and direction.
My primary interests are color and the geometry of the human form. I feel most successful when I can move past the initial composition and fully engage myself, experimenting with color while integrating and improvising shapes within the form. I most frequently work in oil, or acrylic. Most recently, I have been challenged with bringing the spontaneous nature of a “napkin sketch” or doodle to a large canvas.
My work shows at the Houska Gallery in St. Louis, MO. and at the Vault Artist’s Cooperative in Tuscola, IL
Children’s Art Show – A Great Success

Thanks to Teutopolis High School art teacher, Emily Petty, for the use of their racks. We had extra help on Wednesday night from some Effingham High School students, art teachers that stayed and helped with hanging and also with teardown on Saturday. Many thanks to all the art guild members that helped with the show, you know who you are.
Thank You Whitney!
A big THANK YOU goes out to Whitney Ruger for her wonderful presentation on watercolor medium.
