To all Sullivan Art Club members and friends—
We’re back! After a spring and summer break, the Sullivan Art Club is beginning to function again! A meeting place has been found—The Coffee Bean in Sullivan. We will give it a trial-run next month (Nov. 5). I will be conducting the workshop (see below), and we’ll be contacting more experienced instructors for next year. Thank you for your patience. Note the Christmas Party info at the bottom. Contact us if you have any
questions (ron33dor@yahoo.com; 217-728-7280).

SULLIVAN ART CLUB WORKSHOP
November 5, 2011
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
(Break for lunch about noon)
Location: The Coffee B ean, the southeast corner of Main & Harrison
in downtown Sullivan
Workshop Instructor: Ron Bartanen, Sullivan
The preferred medium will be acrylics. However, other medium will be acceptable, and help will be offered for whichever is your choice. One main advantage to acrylics is that it is quicker-drying, making corrections and additions easier. Another is that unless one uses water-soluble oils (which I use), the thinners can be harmful to your health. Acrylics, however, have to be kept moist or they dry out rather quickly.
Bring:
- Paints (recommended: ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, cadmium orange, cadmium red (light), crimson (such as naphthol red), and white.)
- A soft lead pencil to be used for sketching the subject ahead of time in class. Also it will be needed to take notes.
- Assortment of brushes, small and large, bristle and soft. Natural sponges can produce interesting effects if you wish to use them. In fact—anything to get the paint on. I often find fingers to be ever so helpful.
- Palette. Wax paper taped to palette will protect your palette.
- Spray bottle.
- Container(s) for water. A large coffee can or jar would be fine.
- Rags or paper towels.
- Canvas. (11×14 or larger. I wouldn’t recommend larger than a 16×20 due to the limited time. Illustration board or even watercolor paper could be substituted. Paper should be stapled or taped to a drawing board to keep it from buckling. Paper should be 140 lb. or heavier. Some recommend applying gesso to both sides. Preparation recommended: For acrylic and oil paintings, apply
a thin wash of burnt sienna acrylic paint ahead of time.
- A table-easel would be helpful. One can be made from a corrugated cardboard box.
- If you’ll be painting with watercolor, a hair dryer will be helpful.
- Paper for taking notes.
The subject
for the painting will be a rural fall scene. I will have one painting of the subject completed, and I will be doing another during our class time.
Fee: The fee for this one workshop is $10. It would avoid confusion if all will sign the list and pay the fee when they first arrive.
After this session there will be only one other meeting this year—the Christmas party/luncheon, to which all are invited. The luncheon will be held at Goldies Front Porch across from the IGA Store on South Hwy. 32 on Dec. 5, at 11:00 a.m. For those wishing to participate, there will be a “white elephant” gift exchange. It is recommended to keep the price under $5.
