The mountains in this oil are the Spanish Peaks in Southeastern Colorado, near to, but separate from, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. They have had a lot of meaning to me since visiting the area as a child. I painted them from a photo I took more recently, although the foreground is enhanced.

Painted in acrylic with dark, muted tones and broad, expressive brushstrokes, the figure curls inward, her face hidden beneath her hair and her body left unclothed-not as vulnerability for the viewer, but as a symbol of grief stripped bare. The loose, messy application of paint reflects the chaos, exhaustion, and quiet isolation that often accompany sorrow.

This piece was a lot of fun. I enjoy doing ag-related pieces, as my husband is a sixth-generation farmer. A friend of mine raises sunflowers, and I thought the view of her field was beautiful, so I decided it needed a grain bin and barn behind it.

I had so much fun with this one, which is quite different from most of my work. I have never included anthropomorphic animals before. I incorporated some of my mom's old handkerchiefs and a piece of hand-woven fabric gifted by a friend. The cut-out of the Mona Lisa as a mural smoking a cigarette outside the bar is my favorite part.

For three months in 2009 I was a resident artist in a small mountain village in Italy. Our hosts were Lars and Elsa Morgunson. Lars was a retired Washington University professor living in Italy who reveled in philosophical discourse (his area) and seemed to enjoy moving simply daily chats into challenging topics involving aesthetics. The playing card that Lars holds up is a “Face Card” designed to lure the viewer into a mental dialogue as to its meaning and purpose.

As a teenager, I spend my summers and holidays in the country on the old “home place,” as my mom called it. This gas pump stood by the road that ran past the front of my grandparent’s farm house. The pump was installed when Pat and Mike (A team of horses) were retired when our first farm tractor was acquired. Throughout the years it wasn’t unusual to find a couple of dollars next to the pump where in the night someone had helped themselves to a tankful. The pump and the farmhouse are gone now. This painting represents bittersweet feelings of happiness mixed with a slight sadness when I think about the past. It means I am missing people, places, or happy times from long ago.

I was first struck by the geometric design and morning lighting of this bridge near Emminence, Missouri. I then began thinking about what a bridge provides for us. It is a means to traverse from one point to another with safety and ease when the route may be difficult or impossible without it. This bridge had no graffiti but i added my own graffito which describes the true bridge between heaven and earth.

There is a timeless feeling, particularly, with each sunrise and sunset, that invites us to look both closely and more broadly at our surroundings. I often choose to explore the juxtaposition of the wide open spaces with more intimate roadsides and fence rows looking for signs of those who have looked before me

After studying Josef Albers' Homage to the Square works, I created a number of works going from simple to more complex and using many more textures and colors within each piece. Depth is achieved through use of an underpainting and modulating the colors applied to that underpainting. Oil paint stiks have been blended with my fingers in some areas, contrasting areas that were not.

Ravens have many compelling depictions in mythology throughout history and across many cultures. Messengers from the gods, able to cross from the natural to the supernatural realm, harbingers of doom, bringers of truth, tricky deceivers, powerful creators, divine guides, or indicators of safety? There are more questions than answers, much like this artwork. Is Balthazar coming here through the portal or leaving? Is he the familiar of some mighty wizard or is he the wizard himself? Or is it only a bird who has curiously strayed into the apothecary? You tell me. But if he looks you in the eye, I can't be held responsible for your dreams.

This graphite and acrylic piece was inspired by Alphonse Mucha, and Edward S Curtis's 1908 photo "Arikara Girl." Struck by her quiet beauty, I wanted to portray her in a framework of things important to her life. Each plant in the artwork is significant. In her tribe, women owned and managed the gardens and their produce; growing corn, sunflowers, squash, tobacco, and beans to use and trade. Cedar and sage were used in their religious ceremonies. While working on the picture I often wondered what she would think of my work, and whether she would be honored by it.

Our culture is experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. A 2025 Harris poll showed more than 50% of people in the US sometimes or often feel isolated, left out, or lacking in companionship. I joined the art guild because I needed more people in my life. I created this colored pencil piece almost exclusively at our Studio Hours gatherings, where people meet once a month to build community while working on our individual art projects. Tea is often thought of as a social drink (think tea party) so the title refers both to the tea, and the process of creating the artwork. We love her dearly, and I wanted this painting to celebrate the joy she brings to the family.

"Eagle Eye" represents an Eagle watching over her nest.This is what I remembered most from an Alaskan trip many years ago. It took some years, but I finally got inspired.

“Little Red’s Visit” is a piece in great reference to Grimms’ Fairy Tales, both in the subject matter as well as stylistic choices of the piece in general. As someone whose work centers around feminine relationships and experiences as a woman, “Little Red Riding Hood” is a classic story of feminine triumph that has always inspired my work. The use of printmaking for this piece was intentional, paying reference once again to the global spread of the Brothers Grimm.

“Through Our Years” is my personal depiction of an accumulation of memories, moments, and objects captured in time to depict my relationship with my mom, from infancy to adulthood. With a respective story told with both my childhood as well as my life living away at school, each pinned object acts as a memory or symbol of the experiences between me and my mom. With a combination of different media, I used various methods and materials for this piece to feel like an authentic representation of key life moments between me and my mom over the years.

Home for the Holiday was painted for our Vandalia Art Show with the theme, 250th America Celebration. Tractor of our neighbor, barn was at one time on rte 40, grain bins are close to our location, and completing with idea of son comes home from service for holiday celebration.

Vandalia Statehouse depicts Lincoln's ghostly apparition in front of statehouse where he practiced law. Yearly we celebrate (Grand Levee), where people come to see art, wood carving, blacksmiths, reenactments, etc.

Love Our Seasonal Visitors was painted from a picture in our backyard that my wife took. Shows Canada geese that show up every year, some stay and raise their young, teaching them to fly. All fly off before the winter chill sets in.

This piece was created based on a photo that my son took. The old red barn is reminiscent of an earlier time and of course the flag, hat and Army boots are the perfect example of freedom. Nothing quite says proud to be an American like these elements combined into this piece.

Upon previous collages, I had a tendency to stick with one shape of papers to create the image, traditionally rectangles for skies and landscapes. This piece is a conglomeration of shapes, colors, and textures trying to capture a small amount of beauty that was seen in St. John, V.I. However, there is no possible way to capture the colors of that water!

Take Me Home

After completing St. John, I was so burnt out on the colors blue and green that I had a need for color. So often what draws me into a piece is the combinations of colors and variety of shapes and textures. I wanted a sky that took your breath away and of course an old overgrown country road is the perfect element to draw your eye to that glorious sky.
